Drawing of the Garden

This is a Qing dynasty (1644-1911) artist’s rendition of the garden in Dream of the Red Chamber. In Chinese, the garden is called Daguanyuan, or “Garden of Expansive Vision,” which David Hawkes, the eminent translator of the novel, renders as “Prospect Garden.” In The Red Chamber, I refer to it in the epigraph of the first section as “The Garden of the Five Senses” in order to suggest the totality of sensual experience encompassed by the garden.
